Woolworth Community Library Offers a variety of services including:

The Woolworth Community Library has many features:

•Interlibrary loan ◦If the library does not have the item you need, talk to one of the library staff. We may be able to borrow the item from another library.•Preschool Story Time for children ages 3-5 •Summer reading programs for children •Audiovisual equipment is available for use •Equipment available for public use: ◦Photocopy machine ◦Fax machine ◦Computers and printers•Meeting rooms are available for use by the general public under the guidelines established by the Trustees for use of these facilities. •Microfiche readers are provided for public use under the supervision of the library staff.
•Film and lecture theater seating 120•Fully equipped kitchen •Hobby and meeting room •Classroom •Sound proof children's area •Woolworth Memorial Room •Kathy Whitworth display •Time capsule to be opened in the year 2076

Policies:

Non-ELIN Computer Use Policy1.Non-ELIN computers are identified as the last three computers on the computer desks. They are available for word processor applications (i.e., Microsoft Word), spreadsheet applications (i.e., Excel), and other office applications. They may also be used to search online databases provided by the Woolworth Community Library and to search databases provided through the ELIN consortium.2.Patrons must sign in at the Circulation Desk to use non-ELIN computers and provide the following information: number of computer to be used, date of use, time session begins, intended use of the computer, and time the session ends.3.Non-ELIN computers are not available for email sessions or for internet searching except for online databases provided by the library or with special permission granted by library staff. Please use one of the first seven ELIN computers for this purpose. Improper internet use on these computers will terminate your session and result in suspension from computer use for a length of time determined by library staff.4.Users may save data to a flash drive.5.Staff will provide only minimal computer instruction; children should have a computer-literate supervisor available or be able to perform computer tasks without assistance.6.Only one (1) person will be allowed at each computer unless special permission is given by the library staff.7.There is a charge of ten (10) cents for each page printed that exceeds ten (10) pages per day. Excessive printing may be limited at the library's discretion. No color printing is available; print jobs may be collected at the circulation desk.Circulation PolicyAdults:1.Patrons will be required to recognize a three-week trial period upon receiving a new library card. Checkouts during that time will be limited to: a. One (1) videocassette at a time (2-day checkout period)b. One (1) audiobook at a time (3-week checkout period)c. Two (2) books at a time (3-week checkout period)2.At the conclusion of the trial period the following circulation policy applies: a. No limit on videos (2-day checkout period)b. No limit on audiobooks or books (3-week checkout period)Students (Grade 7-12):1.Patrons will be required to recognize a three-week trial period upon receiving a new library card. Checkouts during that time will be limited to: a. One (1) videocassette at a time (2-day checkout period)b. One (1) audiobook at a time (3-week checkout period)c. No limit on books (3-week checkout period)2.At the conclusion of the trial period the following circulation policy applies: a. No limit on videos (2-day checkout period)b. No limit on audiobooks or books (3-week checkout period)Children (K-6th grade):1.Checkouts for children are limited to books and books with cassettes. Children are not allowed to check out video materials.2.Patrons will be required to recognize a three-week trial period upon receiving a new library card. Checkouts during that time will be limited to three (3) items at a time (3-week checkout period).3.At the conclusion of the trial period the following circulation policy applies: a limit of five (5) items at a time (3-week checkout period).4.Library materials may be renewed one time if the item has no holds. Additional renewals are at the discretion of the library staff.Overdue charges:1.Videos: a.Fifty (50) cents per dayb.Maximum fine per item - $1.00c.No grace period2.Books and audiobooks: a.Five (5) cents per dayb.Maximum fine per item - $1.00c.One-week grace periodHow to Obtain a Library CardAdults:1. Must show driver's license2. Must provide a postmarked piece of mail that can confirm the address3 .Must complete and sign an application form4. Must provide a local reference5. Must give place of employment if employedStudents:1. Must be enrolled in the Jal Junior High or Jal High School2. Must complete and sign an application formChildren:1. Children must be at least six (6) years of age2. The parent or guardian of the child must: a. Have a current library cardb. Complete and sign an application form for the childLost cards may be replaced at a cost of $5.00.Rules for Internet Use1.The first seven (7) computers as you enter the library may be used for internet searching. Do not use the other computers for this purpose.2.The library provides internet access as a reference. Please check the library's holdings to find material you need.3. The library's internet workstations are openly visible to the general public, which includes minors. Exposing minors to sexually oriented materials is a violation of the NEW MEXICO STATUTES, 19878, ANNOTATED (CH.30, ART.37). Violators will be prohibited from using the library's computers for entertainment browsing for the period of one (1) full year. Local law enforcement officials may also be notified.4. You must sign in and sign out at the front desk and give a statement of intended use for your internet session. 5. There is a time limit of thirty (30) minutes unless no one is waiting for an available computer. Research browsing takes precedence over entertainment browsing.6. There is a charge of ten (10) cents for each page printed that exceeds ten (10) pages. Excessive printing may be limited at the library's discretion.7. Children under Junior High age will not be allowed to use the computers for internet searching without a "computer knowledgeable" parent or guardian attending the child at all times during the session.8. Only one (1) person at each computer unless special permission is given by library staff.9. Excessive noise or inappropriate use of the computer will terminate your session.

Woolworth History:

C.D. and Martha Woolworth, two of nine children of Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Woolworth, came to Jal, NM in 1915 to file on a homestead six miles north of the present town. They "lived out" their claim and purchased additional land. Their sisters lived in San Angelo, Texas and also purchased land in the area. Petroleum was found and for almost fifty years provided income for the family.Two of the sisters, May and Elizabeth indicated a desire to do something for Jal in memory of the sisters and brother who pioneered here. A library was suggested and their wills drawn with the provision in them.Two other sisters, Clara and Litie left their estates to May and Elizabeth. Their brother, Dr. J.D. Woolworth left a portion of his estate to the library. In this manner, most of the family actually contributed.The Woolworth Room was designed to house original furnishings from the Woolworh home and historical information about Clyde and Martha Woolworth.Through the endowment of the generous Woolworth sisters, the library opened in August, 1978.
